Centre for Language Studies
The Centre for Language Studies at SLIDA conducts Sinhala, Tamil, and English language programs mainly for public servants to develop their proficiency in the official languages and the link language. The official language programs (Sinhala and Tamil) are conducted in collaboration with the Department of Official Languages for participants of the induction training programs of the All Island Services.
English Language Programs
The English language programs range from short courses for both induction and capacity-building programs to one-year Diploma in English.
The SLIDA Diploma in English has been specially designed to develop professional communication skills of the executive level officers in the public sector. A few candidates from the private and not-for-profit sectors will also be admitted based on the availability of space since the program is in high demand. The Certificate in Professional English is a six-month weekend course for officers of non-executive grades in the public sector who need to develop their English communication skills as required by their workplaces. This course will also be helpful to those officers who intend to work at Sri Lanka Missions abroad in future. Please download the brochure for further details.
The speechcraft training program to develop public speaking, personality, and leadership skills is conducted with Toastmasters International. It is a 25-hour program conducted over 10 weeks in 2.5 hour- sessions with resource persons invited from a registered Toastmasters Club.
All these programs are conducted both as calendar programs and customized programs. Apart from these, other customized training programs can also be arranged at the request of the client organizations.
SLIDA has a carefully chosen pool of resource persons to conduct these programs, maintaining very high standards as the leading public sector training institute in the country. Most of them have extensive experience in teaching English to adults at university and other tertiary level institutes both in Sri Lanka and abroad with qualifications up to postgraduate level in Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESL).
